The story of "smiling depression"

May 15, 2019

People with depression may have the image of "a person who feels depressed, has a dark facial expression, is silent and has a feeling of lethargy," but there are various types of people with depression, and it is not apparent. There are also cases.

Like myself, I've been told that I don't look like depression or that I look normal, and I've met other people with depression, but at first glance it's depression. Most of the time I don't know.

Well, I think people who clearly know that they have depression are quite serious, but most people with depression may not be able to tell at a glance.

In recent years, many symptoms called "smiling depression" have been reported.

"Smiling depression" is not a formal medical term, but according to Dr. Heidi Mackenzie of Pennsylvania, "depression and smiles can coexist."

“People with smiling depression tend to cover the symptoms they are feeling,” says Dr. Mackenzie. And then continue to say: "No matter how bad you feel, you can get up every day, change clothes, go to work, and interact with the people around you as if there were no problems."

As a person who has experienced depression, it seems quite possible. The psychology of not wanting to be aware of depression in the surroundings or not wanting to worry about the surroundings also works, and it is said that they spend their time working normally during the day and commute to work or at home. Sometimes.

I remember working normally during the day, but when I was alone in the bathroom or on a break, it was dark and sunk.

When you think of depression, you tend to think that you can't do anything because it's dark and sinks as I wrote earlier, but in mild to moderate depression, it's almost impossible to tell by appearance, so don't notice depression yourself. It may be one of the "quiet illnesses" in which depression is progressing.

I may be "smiling depression"

Some people may be in conflict, saying, "Maybe I'm depressed? No, that's not the case." Depression is a familiar illness that anyone can become.

It's hard to get up in the morning, I feel like I'm dying, I'm getting ready for work in the morning, and I'm feeling desperate until I get to work, but when I get to work and start work Isn't it possible to work normally and behave as a healthy person like other employees?

Even if you think you can work properly, do you make unthinkable easy mistakes?

Do you ever mutter "I want to die" when I'm alone in the bathroom or something?

Do you feel that suicidal ideation is always around you?

If these are the cases, it may be "smiling depression".

The importance of being yourself as you are

I have to live and behave like any other person ...

If you are influenced by such entrainment pressure, you will end up with a mentally ill life without noticing that you are about to develop depression, or even if you have already developed it, and as a result, you will suffer from severe depression symptoms. There is also a risk of being affected.

Depression is a "disease". It's the same as illness or injury. It's like having heart disease, getting cancer, breaking a leg, or suffering from unexplained dizziness.

Therefore, facing the illness properly, accepting depression, and recognizing it as "the true self" may be the first step to get out of depression.

Depressed people were dark and depressed so that people with serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer would not be forced to work, and people with broken legs would not walk or run in a normal walking manner. Even so, forcibly repairing it and trying to smile because it is a characteristic of the disease, and acting like a healthy person, is only an act that worsens the symptoms.
