Talking about whether drawing a picture is good for mental illness and depression

April 1, 2019

Occasionally I go to museums to see paintings, and I also draw a little by myself, but according to the "Pareo Man's Blog" , it seems that there was an experiment saying "Relieve stress with art!".

Relieve stress with art! Is it good for mental?

This is a Drexel University experiment involving 39 men and women (ages 18-59 years). He gave everyone paper, pens, clay, collage materials, etc. and asked them to "make whatever they like!"

As a result, about half of the subjects felt that the stress had decreased somehow, but the other half said that there was no particular change in the stress.

However, when I examined the stress hormone (cortisol) in the body, it was said that the amount of secretion was drastically reduced by about 80% . It feels like a hell.

Reducing stress = It is effective for mental health, so it should be effective for depression in no small measure. It doesn't matter if you're not good at it, so maybe you should try drawing a picture.

Well, regarding this result, I sometimes feel that I am drawing a picture, but when I am drawing a picture

I am absorbed in drawing and concentrate on it for a very long time.
・ I am quite tired, but I feel comfortable and tired.
・ I feel comfortable when completed.

There is. I personally wonder if some hormones that are good for the brain (noradrenaline, oxytocin, etc.) are also produced, but what about?

By the way, I uploaded it on Instagram, but it is a picture with such a touch.

The picture says, "That would make you tired."
Sometimes people say, "You're sick," but yes, you're sick!

If you have an art hobby, your brain function will increase.

By the way, there is research that if you do art hobbies and handicraft hobbies when you are middle-aged, your brain will not weaken and you will not get old.

According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, this survey was conducted on about 256 elderly people, who investigated their hobbies and checked their brain function four years later.

Specifically, they have the following 20 hobbies.

Drawing, sculpture, painting, poetry, paper craft, woodworking, ceramics, quilting, sewing, socializing with friends, movies, theater, concerts, reading clubs, Bible studies, travel, internet search, internet shopping, internet surfing, video games

The most effective hobby was "art" hobbies such as painting and sculpture, and the effect of preventing cognitive decline was 73% . That's why.
By the way, woodworking and sewing are 45% . 55% for socializing and movies . Internet system is 53% .
I don't think the internet system seems to be awkward for old people, but it is effective.

After all, the work of moving hands, the hobby of using the brain, and the polishing of sensibilities cause the brain to rotate fully, and improving brain function seems to be effective for anxiety disorders and depression.

However, when it comes to creative activities that care about the evaluation of others, it is mentally difficult. It's anxious and painful to think that the work I made will be criticized or ignored. It is safer for people with weak mentality to just enjoy themselves.

By the way, it's a little different from art, but even though I'm a WEB designer, I'm depressed, so when it comes to work, people's evaluations are important, so it can be stressful. ..

Maybe it's just right to enjoy everything.
